Welcome to the St. Mary’s Parish summer camp for young people aged 14–19, held at Leirikartano in Sastamala. Participation fee is €130 (including transport). The camp is a wonderful opportunity to meet other Catholic teenagers, have fun in great company, and grow in faith. The camp theme is ’You Are More Than You Think’.

Date and place

  • The camp begins on Wednesday, 3 June at 5 PM.
  • The camp ends on Sunday, 7 June at 3 PM.
  • The venue is Leirikartano (Helluntaiseurakunnan Leirikartano, Yli-houhalan tie 34, Sastamala). The camp site is located on the shore of Lake Houhajärvi, so the brave and swimming-able will have the chance to take a dip.

Camp Venue

Leirialue

Camp area A 3.5-hectare site, of which one hectare is lawn, with additional meadow and forest. This allows for a varied outdoor programme. The camp is located on the shore of Lake Houhajärvi. The water deepens relatively quickly to around three metres.

Accomodation

Accommodation at the camp is in rooms of 6–10 people (girls and boys separately) or in a tent (your own tent or a rental tent available on site). Please bring a sleeping bag or a sheet set.

Important!

Meals are included in the price: breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner, and evening snack. Please inform us of any allergies or dietary restrictions when registering.

Languages: The camp languages are Finnish (primary) and English (secondary).

Transport: Travel to the camp site is arranged by car and, if necessary, by train. We will be in touch with registered participants to organise lifts.

Camp size: A maximum of 40 campers, including senior helpers and leaders.

Safety: The camp has a comprehensive safety plan. Swimming and sauna use are properly supervised.

Camp readiness

  • The young person must be able to sleep in a room with others.
  • The young person must be able to function in a group.
  • The young person’s symptoms of any illness must be sufficiently managed. Symptoms must not place an unreasonable burden on peers, senior helpers, or staff.
  • The young person must be able to go part of the day without a phone.
  • The young person must have basic skills: reading and writing, telling the time, the ability to manage personal hygiene, independence, and adequate eating.

The summer camp leadership team has experience from parish summer camps, parish youth ministry, and teaching on the parish confirmation course.

Jauaries Loyala

camp director, sports coordinator

Janu is a sporty ”coach” who loves all kinds of ball games. It is close to his heart to share the joy of physical activity with others and, through it, to build team spirit. As activities coordinator, he makes sure that games are played in a good and fair spirit — and that by the end of the day the young people have no energy left to stay up late. As camp director, he ensures that everything runs smoothly and that everyone has a great time.

isä Martti Savijoki SCJ

camp priest, teacher, music & praise & worship

Fr. Martti is responsible for youth ministry at St. Mary’s Parish. The letters SCJ stand for Priest of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. His dream is to help young people find true happiness in following Christ. At the camp, Fr. Martti takes special responsibility for the spiritual programme, teaching, worship, and music (he was previously a professional musician). Fr. Martti is available for a confidential conversation about anything.

Iita Haataja

Iita is a 28-year-old theologian and religious education teacher. She enjoys crafts and loves to travel. Together with Fr. Martti, she is particularly responsible for the teaching side of the camp. She also teaches on the parish confirmation course.

Tea Laurila

leader, kitchen coordinator

Tea on iloinen, urheilullinen ja monipuolinen tehopakkaus. Hän kuvaa itseään ”äänekkäästi nauravaksi geotieteiden tohtoriksi”. Tea kirjoittaa myös blogia uskoon liittyvistä aiheista (Marian Matkassa). Ruokavastaavana hän pitää huolen, että kenenkään energia ei lopu kesken kaiken.

Amal Johan

Johan is a joyful soul who tries to live his favorite ’Word of God’
1 Cor 16:14 always. With a degree in Photonics, his passion is to become a Christian light-artist who shows the Real Light-Jesus-to the world. He is an active member of the Jesus Youth international movement and also he serves in our parish with real thirst to share Christ, especially to teens and youth.
